Our director for this production wanted almost all of the props to be handmade, papier mâché to lean into the lunacy of the story. Below you will see the process of some of these items.
The phone was made intentionally oversize and had a mechanism in the back that allowed the telephone wire to be pulled out up to 8' and rewound by a peg in the back
This cover was made so that it could easily be slid off the cover of the original book to preserve it. This piece was also made with papier mâché.
There were a lot of moments in this show that called for blood, so we had to acknowledge a few variables -- quantity, and washability.
The blood had to be fully washable and preferably not prone to staining as it would be getting on costumes and we did not have access to hot water in our venue. As for quantity, we needed it for the chicken moment at the end. That was done about as glamorously as you can probably imagine it -- with a turkey baster and by our lovely SM Team! Chickens were also purchased daily for the shows.
