Elastic is normally what is used to hold the mask onto the face however it can get tight around the ears. Many nurses and doctors are starting to experience irritation and bleeding on the backs on their ears because of the elastic. That being said there are a few strap options that can be used.
Whichever straps that are used should be sewed onto the mask not directly on the outer corner but rather an ½ inch - 1 inch in from the very outside of the mask. This helps seal the side of the mask onto the face.
General elastic that hooks to each ear. Normally elastic that is used is quarter inch to an eighth inch elastic. This can be used for any mask. However, since this elastic is sold out in many stores, Nylon material can be used. It is normally used to make baby headbands and is great for straps because it is very comfortable and does not lose its elasticity.
Many stores are running out of elastic, get creative!
Hairs ties can also be used as straps. They can be cut in half and used for each ear. See Mask#4 for reference.
Bungee cords also can be used for elastic. Cut the cords open and there are strips of elastic inside of them.
Strap #2 are tie back straps. These straps can be made out of any material. Instead of wrapping around the ears, these straps are tied behind the head. Using these helps with the tight edge of the side.
They are 18’’ strips of material that are about an inch wide, folded in half and sewed at the seam. The 1’’ wide strip can also be folded so that the outer edges meet in the middle (horizontally) and then folded again in half (horizontally) and then sewed on the edge. The tip of this strap is then folded in a little and sewed to prevent the fabric from unraveling and to clean up the loose ends.
This tie back technique also could be done with ribbon.
Many stores are running out of elastic (Walmart) so making these cloth straps are your best bet!
This video explains the steps for making these straps.

This strap is elastic that circles around the back and is sewn onto both sides of the mask. There is one on the top of the mask and one on the bottom of the mask.
