Pre-Workshop

Overview

Makey Makey Invention Literacy Workshop for K12 Educators

As an official Makey Makey Partner, we will be hosting a workshop for Makey Makey. Get ready for a fun hands-on workshop where you’ll learn how to teach Invention Literacy, Making, and Design Thinking using the award winning Makey Makey invention kit used by educators in all 50 states and around the world and featured in TED talks. This workshop is new and being delivered throughout the US. You’ll learn best practices and gain access to a multimedia training website that you can use later when you train others or teach the students you serve.

Bring Your Laptop & Charging cable: Windows, Mac, Chromebook, Linux operating systems work great. Tablets will not work. Regardless of the kind of laptop used, it must have the ability to plugin a USB “type A” plug - - these are the most common type of USB plugs and it’s how the Makey Makey is connected to a computer. Some new laptops don’t accept a USB type A plug so the user must supply their own adaptor (“dongle”).

Workshop Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to imagine and build creative circuits.

2. Participants will be able to build simple and effective programs using the free Scratch coding program from MIT that will support a Makey Makey design challenge.

3. Participants will learn how to create and solve open ended design challenges using the Makey Makey.

4. Participants will learn how to build a variety of sensors that provide feedback.

5. Participants will explore how the Makey Makey resources and methodologies support learning outcomes in their classroom.

6. Participants will explore these questions: Where do innovations come from? Can their emergence be influenced?

Welcome Letter

Makey Makey: Invention Literacy

Greetings!

Hello everyone, I am super pumped up to run this Makey Makey workshop. We have one full day of making ahead of us to achieve one huge goal: To empower YOU to believe you can make. Once you believe, then we move forward into creating something awesome for your classroom/learning space.

Event Dates

Thursday, February 6th from 8:30 - 3:00 pm

Event Location

We will be hosting this workshop at the

Mississippi Bend AEA 9

Address: 729 21st St, Bettendorf, IA 52722

We in room 2 located on the bottom floor. Park in the back to avoid having to walk all over the building.

Dress

Come ready to make and build. Wear comfortable clothing. For those that have been with me before you know what I am talking about. Wear clothes that allow you build, cut, glue, paint, sit on the floor, do cartwheels, and synchronous dance moves. Maybe I am kidding about the last one or maybe I am not! Regardless. Wear clothes that can get messy and you feel good in.

Place mullets and any long hair back in a ponytail.

Technology

We will be using your phone to document some of your builds and designs for the work we are doing. Please bring your phone to allow for photo and video.

Please bring your own laptop. You will need a computer with a USB port for the Makey Makey to work. We plan on spending most of the time networking in person, but there will be times for online searching and adding of materials.

A main goal of the two days is building not only kits and ideas, but relationships with the people in the room. There is much less tech than a typical PD and that is designed to keep your flow states high and not distracted by email and such.

Materials

All materials will be provided for you for the making.
