Because technology is dynamic, our understanding of the most effective and responsive means to connect with students must be as dynamic. Ongoing professional development, then, is a central component to effective online teaching.
Great teachers are always lifelong learners...this is one of my goals!
Although I have taught online classes for a decade, there was not as much support around effective communication and course design in the past. I had, what I felt like were "good" classes, and I communicated well with students.
I have always participated in professional development through conferences and campus workshops.
It wasn't until our college was transitioning to Canvas that I realized there was so much more that could make my courses more human, dynamic, and equitable. As I was converting my courses to Canvas, I began to take @ONE courses, mainly for professional development for step increases. However, I soon became addicted to them and wanted to transform my classes. I have completed all classes required for the Online Teaching Principles Capstone, as well as the ones for the Course Design Fundamentals Capstone.
I am currently very active on campus and in state programs related to OER due to my position as the OER Co-Chair. I have attended the Online Teaching Conference for several years now, as well as the Open Ed conference (2018) and annual Gerontology and Sociology meetings.
Now that I am completing my capstones for my online teaching certificates, it is time for me to fully reinvigorate my courses. My plan is to start with my Introduction to Sociology course and use these @ONE courses as a new lens to revise my classes.
I plan to stay involved with many college-wide committees (student success, pathways, equity, career technical education, online education, and OER). In addition, I am planning to attend the Online Education Conference in June and stay abreast of new and changing information related to online teaching.
Ongoing learning throughout life means that we are actively involved in our teaching and never stop learning. One way to accomplish this is through professional development opportunities, such as these @ONE classes, on-campus workshops, committees, state initiatives, etc. As the Open Educational Resources Co-Chair for Saddleback College, I am constantly learning and sharing about OER.
Please view my professional ePortfolio website for examples relating to this principle.
