MALAYSIAN ASSOCIATION OF JAPANESE STUDIES
PERSATUAN PENGAJIAN JEPUN MALAYSIA
BACKGROUND
Malaysian Association of Japanese Studies (MAJAS) is a national association established to support the development of Japan studies in Malaysia. It serves as a link for Malaysian scholars on Japan studies scattered in the universities and other research institutions throughout the country. It was formed with an inaugural meeting on Saturday, March 21, 1998, held at the Japan Cultural Centre, Wisma Nusantara, Kuala Lumpur.
The formation of MAJAS is deeply indebted to the efforts of its co-founders, the late Professor Dr. Lee Poh Ping and Associate Professor Dr. Md Nasrudin Md. Akhir. Moreover, the formation of MAJAS would not have been possible without the financial assistance received from The Japan Foundation through the efforts of the Director-General at the time, Mr. Hirota Takao.
OBJECTIVES
To offer opportunities for interaction among scholars of, and others with a serious interest in Japan studies in Malaysia.
To help disseminate the result of scholarship on Japan to a wider public.
To encourage networking between Malaysian scholars of Japan studies with their overseas counterparts.
To organize national or international seminars, lectures, talks and etc. pertaining to Japan studies.
To publish a scholarly journal or books on Japan studies - where circumstances permit.
MEMBERSHIP
Regular membership is open to Malaysians who are actively engaged in teaching and research, or who are professionally interested in areas pertaining to Japan studies or Japan-Malaysia relations. It is also open to Malaysians who are not directly involved in teaching or research in Japan studies but are interested in promoting the goals and activities of MAJAS. Permanent residents and foreign nationals interested in promoting the aims and purposes of MAJAS can become associate members. Anyone wishing to become a member of MAJAS can write to the Secretary-General for an application form.
