Tournament Rules - Penalties

Failure to respect tournament rules may result in the assessment of penalty points and/or disqualification (DQ) from an event or the tournament. By participating in the Maine Science Olympiad students, their parents, coaches and supporters agree to accept and respect the decisions of supervisors, judges, and tournament directors. To acknowledge that the rules have been reviewed and the consequences for violation have been accepted, a coach and their school principal MUST sign and date this form AND, as a prerequisite for competition, this form MUST be submitted at the registration desk on the day of the tournament (March 30, 2019).

INTERFERENCE

Only students competing in an event, persons assigned to assist in conducting an event, and those with authorization from the event supervisor may enter an area designated for competition. Ten (10) penalty points may be assessed to a student or a team associated with this type of interference or disruption.

If a student acts to impair the ability of another student to compete, the offending student may be DQ from the event and the highest possible score (the total number of teams competing in the division) may be assigned. If a team deliberately acts to impair the ability of another team to compete the offending team may be DQ from the tournament.

CHEATING

Any student who cheats during an event may be DQ from that event and the highest possible score (the total number of teams competing in the division) may be assigned to their team for that event. If a team cheats, they may be DQ from the tournament and possibly from future years.

VANDALISM

If a team member(s) or persons associated with a team commit(s) vandalism, the team may be DQ from the competition. Furthermore, no awards may be given to any members of the team. The team’s school and parents of the team agree to pay the cost of repairing damage due to vandalism; this must be done before the student and/or team is eligible to compete in subsequent Science Olympiad tournaments.

Vandalism is defined to mean a deliberate action that results in damage to property. This includes, but is not limited to, graffiti, damage to facility property, and damage to the personal property of competitors judges and spectators.
