Mahjong sets are "works of art!" I love playing with the more intricate older sets, you can feel the beauty and history in every piece. Happy "self draw!"
Facts to consider:
Will this be my only set?
Pre-owned or new?
Size - what size is your playing surface?
With or without Arabic numerals?
How does it feel?
I source old Mahjong sets, inspect them, clean them and often improve them by providing additional elements that are missing.
These sets are then offered to all of my students for purchase. Please contact me if you are interested.
Mahjong Table / Table top
If you have a square or round table, you can just throw a cloth on it and that will do! However, having an edge to stack tiles and prevent them from flying off the table is very nice, so here are some options:
Mahjong tables with or without drawers - These run from $100 to $1,000+. you can often buy pre-owned. Very basic ones can be purchased in Chinatown or online from many sellers. There is a wide variety. including automatic tables that washes and stack the tiles for you, but I don't particularly care for these, because they require the magnetic mahjong sets that are much heavier.
Mahjong table top with an edge - The Japanese roll up "Junk" mat is 27" x 27" can only accommodate smaller Mahjong sets. It also needs a solid table underneath so you can't use a table that is slightly smaller. However, it's very well made, easy storage and portable and has slots for mahjong chip.
DIY Mahjong table top - Get a 30" 30" picture frame, and a mahjong mat that you can cut to size and make your own.
