If your business is planning to start offering deliveries, there are some pieces of material handling equipment that you are likely to need before you can safely and efficiently deliver products to customers. From hand trucks for general deliveries with boxes to ramps for helping with larger deliveries over curbs, here are some of the tools your company will need to start offering deliveries.
Heavy Duty Hand Truck
A Delivery Truck for Transportation
The first and probably most obvious tool you need to start offering deliveries is a delivery truck. Your business needs to be able to transport the goods, and a delivery truck or van needs to be big enough to manage multiple deliveries at once, or handle larger items, depending on your delivery needs. Make sure to get a delivery truck that is large enough to suit your business’ needs.
Hand Carts for Most Deliveries
Now that your business has a delivery truck or van, your business’ employees need something to move the deliveries on and off the truck. One of the most versatile options that will be good for the majority of general business deliveries is a high-quality, lightweight aluminum hand cart. These are ideal for moving multiple boxes at a time, saving employees from having to carry only one or two boxes, as well as increasing safety by lowering the risk of tripping. This also helps keep the load safe, as they are less likely to fall off a hand cart, especially if secured with straps.
A Heavy Duty Hand Truck for Bigger Loads
When you have heavier, bulkier loads, such as large appliances, including water heaters or large refrigerators, you may need to invest in a heavy duty hand truck. The best heavy duty hand truck manufacturers offer options such as wings for wider loads, a break back bar, a ratchet strap to hold the load in place, and more. A heavy duty hand truck can eliminate the need for team lifting, whether it’s loading from a warehouse into the truck or delivering the item at the destination. It also helps reduce the risk of strain on employees.
Ramps for Trucks and Curbs
Ramps can help your employees get over large curbs and other obstacles, as well as remove heavier loads from a truck without straining. If a truck is transporting heavy items or needs to back up to a loading dock, it should be equipped with a ramp. Good material handling practices, such as using hand trucks in combination with the proper tools, including ramps, can greatly reduce the risk of injury.
Work Gloves
An often forgotten tool for delivery drivers is the work glove. While smaller boxes can be stacked and unloaded from hand trucks with little problem, work gloves are a good idea to prevent scrapes and cuts. Larger deliveries may require work gloves for a better grip.
