Hello!
My name is Maggie Saunders and I am from Huntington West Virginia. I graduated with my Bachelors in Early Childhood Education from Marshall University in 2021 and decided to pursue my Masters directly after graduation. Two days after my graducation, I started in a three year old classroom at FABCare as the lead teacher where i continue to teach today. This is currently my third group of students I have had in that classroom. Along with teaching, I also work as a Graduate Assistant at Marshall University in the LEAD Center over Fraternity and Sorority Life.
When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with friends, family, being outside, or taking care of my dog Chandler who has epilepsy.
My Goals:
When I was younger, I was always drawn to the idea of being a teacher; however, I was never supported by part of my family. As I got older, I pushed those thoughts to the side and tried to find another career which spoke to me. When I first started college, I was in the nursing program; however, quickly found that I was not happy. I went to leave that college and found myself walking to the education building without realizing it. I walked into the building and ran into a professor in the hallway who asked if I was lost. I explained to her my situation, and she immediately took me to someone who could help me and made me feel like I was important and mattered in this program. This is one of the goals I have for myself as a teacher. I want to be that person to make students feel important and welcome when they may feel lost.
When reflecting on some personal goals for myself throughout this program, one of my goals was to become more confident in my leadership and teaching skills. I was always a shy kid who was afraid to talk in front of groups of people. This was always a trait about myself that I did not enjoy. One of the reasons I decided to pursue this degree was to not only improve on these skills for myself, but to also help others like me and hopefully make them not go through the same situations and feelings which I did. The personal reason behind this profession was making sure no one else felt like I did when I was a child. Along with wanting to help others, my goal is to better educate myself and deepen the knowledge I have when it comes to helping children develop and finding out who they are.
When reflecting on my professional goals, my biggest goal at the moment is to get my master’s degree which I can use in the future. I plan on moving soon which means I need to prepare for and take all the licensing tests needed for where I am moving. Along with being prepared myself, my goal is to feel confident in my abilities of preparing children for their educational journey. While I have ideas in my head and know the logic, I want to be able to explain the logistics of my thoughts to others in a way that is easy to understand. I would also like to learn effective communication strategies which can be used to communicate with co-workers, administration, and families I will be involved with. My final professional goal is to learn how to interact with parents in a more effective way and have them be active participants in the classroom along with their children while proving a safe space where everyone feels welcome.
