Monocacy Battlefield

On July 9, 1864, the battle of Monocacy took place. This is known as the battle that saved Washington because it allowed reinforcements to arrive in Washington before the Confederacy attacked it. This was the northernmost victory for the Confederates in the war.

Manassas/Bull Run Battlefield

The first battle of Bull Run took place on July 21, 1861, and was the first major battle of the Civil War. Both armies had not anticipated a long and bloody war, but this battle proved to both sides that it would be much longer and bloodier than anticipated.

The second battle of Bull Run took place on August 29-30, 1862.  The second battle at Bull Run was much larger than the first.  Lee's success at Bull Run sparked his drive to invade the north.

Tonight, there will be a presentation from the American Civil War Museum.  The presentation will discuss why Richmond was chosen as the Confederate capital and how it changed as a result of it to become a city of hospitals and military prisons besieged by dangers from within and without. You will have an option to sign up for the event on the registration form.

Tonight we will stay in Fredericksburg, Virginia
