Dean's Award for Best Overall Performance in the MPC, 2022 - This award is given to the graduate student with the highest overall GPA, upon completion of the MPC program.
When I started graduate studies, I challenged myself to aim for a B. As a perpetual "A+ or bust" kind of kid, this was tricky for me. And you know what? I would give myself a B on my goal of aiming for a B. I definitely worked my ass of during the year I was a student, but I standby the fact that I did project that interested me, and put more time into what I cared about, and breezed over the rest. I tried to sneak fun in at every turn as well.
Turns out, these are the exact techniques that will lead to an A+ in graduate school, as illustrated by me coming out on top of my class of 25 bright communicators. Here are my remarks from the ceremony.
It was truly a gift to spend a year expanding my critical thinking and communication skills.
Thanks to my friends and family, including Matt and Nick who are here tonight.
Thanks to Dr. Caroline O'Brien, Chair of the School of Performance and to all my former colleagues across campus.
To my 24 extraordinary MPC classmates. Thank you and congratulations.
To all professors and administrators at the School of Professional Communication.
To Dave, thank you for your support and your kinds words tonight.
After my undergrad in acting and 6 years in various professional fields, I knew a return to more academic pursuits would be challenging. What I didn't anticipate was how much FUN it would be.
To my colleagues here who are current students - I strongly encourage you to take your studies into your own hands and follow what delights you. I have a sneaking hunch that in leading with curiosity you'll have more fun, and that having more fun may even be a key to success.
Thanks again, and congrats to my fellow recipients!
The program culminated with 4 months to complete a Major Research Project. I had the total joy of working with Dr. Dave Colangelo as my supervisor. I interviewed travel agents who specialise in providing services to blind and partially sighted tourist and explored
This lightening talk summarises my work.
Here's the paper!
Reflection: Writing this paper was one of the most special experiences of my life. After writing the literarture review, methadology, and conducting the interviews, I spent SO MUCH TIME pouring over my transcripts. I printed them out and taped them together, and highlighted them and tagged them with sticky notes, and turned them into spreadsheets, and printed out those etc. I gave myself very little time to write the paper. I checked myself in to a road-side motel in Haliburton for two night, and the entire article flowed out of me. I took reasonable breaks, went on walks, worked from cafes, docks, and my motel room desk, and wrote the research. Only minimal edits were needed to get to the final draft, linked above.
I normally start project well in advance, and spend a lot of time labouring to get them out. On the contrary, this was so easeful. I was prepared, and I was confident in my prepartation. Summer was beginning, my first deadline was approaching, I was in interviews for a new job, and I wanted it done. And it got done. No drama.
In 2021 I took the Chang School's Certificate in Inclusive Media. Here I learned live re-speaking (a captioning technique to make live video material accessible to the Deaf community), and I specialised in Audio Description (an assistive tool to make visual cultural information available to people who are blind or experience low-vision).
Right after graduating from my BFA in Acting, I moved to Haliburton for 2 months to do a certificate in Expresive Arts (art practice for healing and self-development). I lived in this cabin in the woods, went to class and made art in the days, and drum circles and kirtans in the evening. In retrospect, I think this time helped me transition out of being a full-time acting student and integrate all the experiences that entailed. I came 1 credit short of graduating, and returned in 2022 to complete the program.
I really liked theatre school. I did well, learned lots, and got to play cool roles. I met some of my best friends. The biggest lesson I am still learning is to do all the prep work - go ham on it - then when it comes time to perform, don't try to show the audience your prep work. Just play. Plays are called plays for a reason.
I'll share my Bunny Ball speech, if I can find it. I was elected valedictorian of my class of 22 actors.
Last updated Summer, 2022 - ch- ch- check it out!
The Babin Cat came into our lives a few weeks into the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic shut downs. Nicole and I had been home for 10 days, which felt like an etertity, and we heard we may be in lock down until JUNE (!?!? over course it turned out to be much longer). We needed a cat. It turns out, so did everyone else. We applied to adopt many, and were rejected. At last a cat for us! Boyfriend was listed as a shorted haired, male, 1 y/o cat. No picture. No further description. We applied, and he was ours. We walked from our home in the West End to the SPCA in the east (we were afraid of everything). We were the only one's allowed in, and he was the only animal in the viewing area. They gave us medical gowns and gloves, but no masks (how little we knew). He was desperate for affection and showed us his naked belly right away. We learned he came from death row at a shelter in Texas, where he was labelled as a female cat name Bandit's Girlfriend (we still wonder where Bandit is now...). In Texas he had a mystery belly surgery, and stress was leading him to lick away the little hair he had left on his tummy. Poor kitty. For $60, he was ours now.
Babin has grown so much, physically, follicly, and otherwise. He is no longer food obbsesed, he remains play obbessed and he is supremely cuddly.
