Diversity and inclusion play a large role in inclusive leadership. As an inclusive leader, it is important to recognize that diversity and inclusion have different definitions.
Diversity is a combination of people of different race, ethnicity, sex, gender, skills, knowledge, ability, cultural background, age, ect.
Inclusion is a process that creates a sense of belongingness while encouraging authenticity and appreciating uniqueness.

As Dr. Shirley Davis explains it, diversity is like "counting the heads" (eSpeakers, 2019). This means diversity represents the difference that each individual has. The infographic to the left shows four diverse individuals. They are each from different countries, are of different races, are different genders, and have different cultural backgrounds.
Diversity does not necessarily mean everyone comes from different countries and cultures. It can be as simple as having different life experiences and expertise.
Dr. Shirley Davis describes inclusion as "making heads count" (eSpeakers, 2019). Inclusion helps everyone feel as if they belong. The infographic to the right shows how the diverse individuals feel included on their team. Key aspects of inclusion are belongingness, feeling accepted, embracing authenticity, and having a voice that is valued.
Inclusive leaders practice incorporating inclusion by creating a sense of belongingness and embracing uniqueness (Northouse, 2022). Inclusive leaders promote and accept diversity.
Inclusive leaders incorporate team members' views and opinions while making decisions, are open to and promote contributions from all members, and support all members (Northouse, 2022).
