This project examines how various macroeconomic shocks, including both historical and current fiscal and financial shocks, as well as population aging, can hinder the development of inclusive societies. The focus is on understanding how these shocks contribute to the rise of populism, anti-EU attitudes, and reduced trust in EU institutions. The project focuses on European countries that have been similarly affected by these macroeconomic shocks, given the goal of exploring the European identity.
The project explores two key threats to inclusivity: the rise of populism and populist attitudes, as well as the potential erosion of European citizenship identity. By analyzing these factors in detail, we provide insights into how macroeconomic shocks shape public attitudes and political behaviors, which can ultimately undermine the inclusiveness of European societies. Our goal is to develop concrete policy recommendations to tackle the challenges identified.
