History

In the Kalikapuran it is mentioned that Pragjyotispur , the ancient capital of Pragjyotisa alias Kamrupa  was in the middle of Kingdom  where Kamakhya Devi dwelt. The facts of Kamakhya Temple is mixed with myth, history and legends. This temple  presumed to have come  into prominence during the reign of Naraka, who was the  main ruler of Kamrupa. But the history is obscure till the rise of Koch Kingdom during the mid 16th century AD on the existence of Kamakhya Temple.It is said that during the reign of Biswa Singha,1520-1540 AD, the temple was re-built for the first time, however no  historical evidence was found. The history of Kamakhya Temple was found accurately from the reign of the successor King Naranarayana, he renovated the temple  in 1565 AD.From the beginning of 17th century AD,Assam history entered in a new phase as Ahom established themselves as the major force. In the reign of Shiva Singha, the Ahom King, during 1714 to 1744 AD, the royal patronage was extended to Kamakhya temple and the other temples of Nilachal Hill.Pramatta Singha successor of Shiva Singha during  1744 to 1751 AD  also continued to render the royal patronage. During the reign of Rajeswara Singha, 1751 to 1768 AD, the Natmandir towards western side was annexed.With the beginning of British rule in Assam, the history of Kamakhya Temple went into oblivion. The great earth quake  in 1897 AD  destroyed  the temple, however could be rebuilt with the assistance of the devoted Kings  of the nearby areas.The history of Kamakhya Temple  indicates the Royal patronage rendered and also respected the sentiment of the people on Goddess Kamakhya  by extending  the assistance as when required.
