Nilachal Hill is the abode of Mother Kamakhya, situated in the bank of mighty Brahamaputra , in Guwahati,Assam. The Temple complex on this hill is about ten kilometer away from the main city. The Assam Trunk road is passing by the Hill. The temple is about 180 meter above the surrounding area.Nilachal Hill has been variously mentioned as Nilakuta, Nilapaarvata, Nilgiri, Kamaparvata etc at the ancient time.
The Nilachal Hill being situated in the bank of the mighty perennial river, water ways was traditionally the main source of communication earlier .Four foot paths from four directions leading to the top of the Hill.Out of the four paths, the one from eastern side through rocky terrain called Mekhela-Ujuwa, traditionally the most popular and believed to be blessed with prosperity ,if climbed through this path. The path form Northern, Pandunath , provides salvation , and the path from western side blessed to gain Kingdom. The path from southern side brings bad luck, and mostly avoided .The stone paved path from the east was however popular among the pilgrimages .There were twelve ghat (river dock) on the bank of the river around the Nilachal Hill for ferry services earlier.
During 1956-1958 the three Kilometer long motorable road connecting Assam Trunk Road to Kamakhya temple was constructed from the northern side of the hill.A new road from western side has recently been constructed towards Kamakhya Temple connecting the road at the eastern side near the Temple. Even today the footpaths from northern and eastern was used by devotees , however the ghat (river docks ) are hardly used and some of are not exist at present.
The facts of Kamakhya temple are covered in mystery. The earliest phase of history is available from the traditional history , puranas and tantras. The actual time of establishment of Kamakhya temple is not known .In kalikapuran ,written in 9th century AD, the existence of Kamakhya temple can be traced. Again In Mahabharat composed in 1st century AD, it was mentioned that the Pandavas came to Kamakhya Temple to worship. Therefore it may be presumed that the worship continues for hundreds year but the temple was constructed at the later part. There is a place called Pandunath , a water front , at the western end of Nilachal Hill.It is believed that Panch Pandav during their agyatavas (exile) came to this place, bathed in the river and worshiped Kamakhya Devi to regain the lost Kingdom. In Kalikapuran, the earliest documents also contains detail on Kamakhya Temple. As per the purana, Kamrupa , the ancient name of Assam, also derived its name from Devi Kamakhya.Naraka is the prominent figure in kalikapuran.Visnu, the father of Naraka brought him to Kamrupa and Kamakhya was the rulling Goddess who dwelt with Siva secretly. Vishnu told Naraka to worship Goddess Kamakhya, but Naraka attacked and defeted Ghataka ,the king of Kamrupa. It is therefore presumed that Kamakhya devi was deity of Kamrupa also known as Pragjyotisa even before the advent of Naraka. In Kalikapuran, another legend is mentioned where relation is drawn between the death episode of sati and origin of Kamakhya.Daksa, the son of Bramha and father of Sati, organised a Yajna and invited God and Goddess except Sati and Her husband Lord Siva as he did not like Siva due to his way of living , but Sati came uninvited to meet with others and reprimanded by his father badly. Out of grief Sati gave up her body and on hearing this ,Siva became angry and destroyed sacrificial place and roamed around the universe with anguish carrying the body of Sati in His shoulder. This resulted panic and jeopardies the existence of universe. To bring Shive to His scenes, Lord Visnu started secretly detaching the organs from the body of Sati. Lord Visnu cut the body of Sati into fifty one parts. Wherever her limb feel ,that turned into a shrine. The place of the Hill where yoni of Sati fell, turned into blue and the place came to know as Nilachal. The yoni mandala of Sati exists in a form of stone and the Kamakhya pitha came in to being. The yogini Tantar is also the important source of information on myths of Kamakhya Temple. Here the deity of Kamakhya Temple is said to be Kali.
In the Kalikapuran it is mentioned that Pragjyotispur , the ancient capital of Pragjyotisa alias Kamrupa was in the middle of Kingdom where Kamakhya Devi dwelt. The facts of Kamakhya Temple is mixed with myth, history and legends. This temple presumed to have come into prominence during the reign of Naraka, who was the main ruler of Kamrupa. But the history is obscure till the rise of Koch Kingdom during the mid 16th century AD on the existence of Kamakhya Temple. It is said that during the reign of Biswa Singha,1520-1540 AD, the temple was re-built for the first time, however no historical evidence was found. The history of Kamakhya Temple was found accurately from the reign of the successor King Naranarayana, he renovated the temple in 1565 AD.From the beginning of 17th century AD,Assam history entered in a new phase as Ahom established themselves as the major force. In the reign of Shiva Singha, the Ahom King, during 1714 to 1744 AD, the royal patronage was extended to Kamakhya temple and the other temples of Nilachal Hill.Pramatta Singha successor of Shiva Singha during 1744 to 1751 AD also continued to render the royal patronage. During the reign of Rajeswara Singha, 1751 to 1768 AD, the Natmandir towards western side was annexed. With the beginning of British rule in Assam, the history of Kamakhya Temple went into oblivion. The great earth quake in 1897 AD destroyed the temple, however could be rebuilt with the assistance of the devoted Kings of the nearby areas. The history of Kamakhya Temple indicates the Royal patronage rendered and also respected the sentiment of the people on Goddess Kamakhya by extending the assistance as when required.

The outer wall has stone sculptures from an earlier period embedded on it.The structural design and the rock-cut sculpture in the vicinity of the temple indicates that the temple was reconstructed and renovated many times in the period 8th,to 9th, 11th to 14th centuries and even in the later centuries.
