M2YRO

Mediterranean Meeting of Young Researchers in Optics

València, 18-20th of April 2024

I Mediterranean Meeting of Young researchers in Optics (M2YRO), a three-day scientific conference that brings together early-career researchers and students in Optics and Photonics to network and share insights into emerging trends and challenges. This meeting will be held from the 18th to 20th April 2023, in València, Spain. Organised by the student chapters OCAS and Photonets.

The meeting is the Eastern edition of the annual North-western MYRO organized by Salamanca (OSAL) and Santiago de Compostela’s (Luzada) chapters that already counts with two editions.

Abstract submission deadline: April 9th

Notification for acceptance will be sent on April 10th. Posters are automatically accepted.

Round table on academia to industry transfer

OBJECTIVES

Career Development

Three invited talks will highlight the topics of visual optics, imaging, and non-linear, being the essential dissemination part of these scientific fields. In addition to the lecture talks, young researchers will be given the opportunity to present their work in the Fast Talks session. Likewise, a roundtable discussion with companies specialized in optics and photonics will take place. All participants are encouraged to interact, get to know each other, and establish connections with various researchers and colleagues.

Diversity and Inclusion

Emphasizing our commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion within the realm of optics and photonics, a thought-provoking invited talk on "Women in Science and Optics" will be featured. This session aims not only to shed light on the significant contributions of women in these fields but also to reinforce the need of doing it on the scientific outreach we carry on. Ana López Navajas, the coordinator of Women’s Legacy, a pioneering European project dedicated to retrieving the cultural and scientific work by female authors, will be our distinguished speaker.

Mental Health in the Scientific Community

M2YRO includes a workshop focused on addressing mental health issues in the scientific community, offering a supportive environment for discussion and understanding. This session, led by an expert psychologist, will center on key aspects such as healthy leadership in scientific groups, resilience and stress, and the management of frustration. Moreover, it will provide tools to take care of mental health during the postgraduate research program.

Outreach

The closing day of the meeting will also be the opening day of the International Day of Light  IDL 2024 celebrations and serves as the grand finale of the M2YRO. At its core, it will feature a scientific fair held at the Jardín Botánico of the Universitat de Valencia. The fair is a gateway for the community to engage with the wonders of science, with a myriad of booths dedicated to various optical phenomena.

The event boasts a spectrum of experiences, starting with interactive demonstrations on polarization, diffraction, color filters, scattering, and image formation. Additionally, attendees can immerse themselves in giant experiments showcasing optical phenomena like absorption, reflection, and expansive imaging, offering not only observation but also opportunities for interaction and photography.

In addition to these demonstrations, a gincana will take place for the attendees of the meeting. At the closing of the scientific fair, along with the M2YRO event, prizes will be awarded to the winners of the gincana, as well as those who excelled in the poster and oral presentation sessions.
