Co-Lab I: In Between

In Between - Wake explores being on the cusp of waking and falling back asleep every morning. Utilizing two separate frames and plastic wrap, Wake is a trio performance depicting the two paths one may take in bed in the morning. Two performers representing two different consciousnesses tempt the remaining performer, whom is trying to awaken.

Wake was created by integrating elements of "cusp" from all five members of the group that were discussed prior to the brainstorming and creation of the performance. Shadows, light, tempo, characterization, theme, and visuals were all toyed and played with over the course of devising Wake.

The group took inspiration from the style of music videos as well as contemporary/abstract dance in order to mash the two into choreography. We did not want the moveset to be too stylized or too abstract. We wanted it somewhere right in between.

Utilizing all these integrated elements, the group was able to come up with the idea of getting up and falling back asleep as a dilemma and being torn between two different states/paths (an "angel" and "devil" character, if you will). From there, the choreography was made and the set was built.

Unfortunately, a member of the group had to step away due to time conflicts, so there was a minor mishmash of individuals playing the part of the "angel" over the course of the performance's development.
