James'
Butter & Yumi
19 FEBRUARY 2020 - 1 JUNE 2020DAY CAREBOARDING
Yumi was the first pup to board my home for just the day. As the request came in just the night before, there was little room for me to plan ahead although I did the best I could. A quick skim through PetBacker's boarding guide prompted me to remind James to prepare Yumi's essentials during her stay: peepads, Yumi's snack, and her leash. However, we forgot one HUGE thing: toys.
Having my first dog ever to enter my home, my full attention was on Yumi's every move around my living space and every sniff in each nook her curious snout would probe into. Once she'd exhausted all the rooms in my house, she settled down right outisde by my doorway, sprawled in anticipation of what's next. I glanced back at her with the same exact aniticipation - I had no clue. Were we supposed to stare at each other the rest of the day?
Something was missing, I figured we could engage over some toys if we had some around. The thought of making a trip out to purchase any wasn't convincing as I only had the job for the day. Then, a lightbulb moment hit me: I could make one from scratch!
The first post from Uncle Google got me into crafting frenzy. I dugged up worn clothes giving them a second life as a doggy plaything. This became a personal win as well with my newfound practice in attempting a zero-waste lifestyle - getting creative in turning scraps into value.
Noticing that Yumi and I were passing by, this young child, in her baby blue summer dress, clambered off a tree and sprang towards us in pure delight withholding no reservations. And honestly, who wouldn't wish to at the sight of Yumi? Yumi, however, was obviously startled by this elaborate show of attention. Her usual playful bow to new strangers and fur buds was replaced with clear inhibitions as she backed away behind me, her eyes wide in alarm.
Somewhat offended, the little girl halted in her tracks as the excitement from her face overshadowed with doubt. Personally, Yumi's behaviour took me by surprise as well. She has always seemed very friendly and comfortable around new company until now. Part of me wanted to yield into Yumi's reservations and walk away instead. My closest friends would have understood seeing how uncomfortable I typically am with children.
Alas, being the adult in the situation, I figured it was up to me to turn the matter around despite honestly being as perturbed as anyone else. I stooped down while consoling both Yumi and the girl that there was nothing to be afraid of.

I have been missing Yumi and Butter for months till one day I got a ping from James requesting for boarding services for the night - I was delighted! Butter had grown but she was also feeling under the weather and spent most of her stay hiding upstairs. Yumi tried to make friends with Dirac and Goeppert but it wasn't a good match, things got snappy! She was as playful as always and loved fetch with her toys.
