Apr. 6, 2024: STM is here!
The 400mK, 9-2-2 Tesla Unisoku STM arrives at IISER Berhampur! This is only the beginning of challenges and we are ready for it. The lab is still under construction so stay tuned for photos of atoms and electrons dancing around them in various quantum ways! We hope to get there in next 6 months. Liquefier is another year away. LVQM is happy with celebrating baby steps, cautious optimism and working hard at each instant.
Jan. 10, 2024: Rahul delivered an invited lecture at the International Conference on Functional Materials (ICFM) 2024 at IIT-KGP.
Rahul and Soumyojit attended the ICFM 2024 organized by IIT-KGP. We thank IIT-KGP for their generous hospitality and organizing such an exhilarating
conference and allowing us to showcase our efforts at IISER-Berhampur to establish a world-class spectroscopic imaging STM facility. We have come back supercharged with ideas and inspiration!
Sep. 4, 2023: Rahul gets DST-SERB Startup Research Grant
We thank Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India for their generous support and trust in our research.
Sep. 1, 2023: Pratyasha presents poster for LVQM at RAAC meeting
Pratyasha, our undergraduate student, presented a poster on her summer work of simulating STM images using density functional theory in a meeting for research and academic advisory council of IISER Berhampur consisting of eminent scientists from all over India.
Apr 20, 2023: Aditya defends his Master's thesis
Aditya was the first research student we had. He helped us get started with one of the main pillars of our research: DFT calculations. With Aditya, we worked with Quantum Espresso and reproduced some published results to benchmark our understanding and codes. He graduates and we wish him all the best for the future! He is the first LVQM alumni, as my postdoc advisor Prof. Johnpierre Paglione says, one never leaves the group , they just go on to work at a different place :-)
Mar 24, 2023: LVQM creates its GitHub repository.
Coding is fun and we use a lot of code in our research to analyze and visualize data. We also want to create a repository of Physics teaching demos to help students and instructors everywhere. The day was too busy and I could only make 1 commit for Readme! Here's to much more. https://github.com/lvqm-iiser-bpr
Mar 16, 2023: LVQM has its first group meeting!
Research, like life, is all about enjoying the process, not the results :-) We celebrated our first group meeting with a cake! Our quantum cake shows the wave nature of frosting which is trying its best to spell LVQM! Even though I am yet to have a laboratory, I am grateful to be productively engaged with enthusiastic young researchers.
Jan 13th, 2023: Rahul and Soumyojit visit IIT-Bhubaneshwar.
Rahul delivers a talk for Department Seminar.
We are very grateful to Prof. Amritendu Roy who generously opened his heart and labs for us to take knowledge and love from. One of the most gracious hosts, he showed us how a new department and lab facilities are built. He showed us multiple amazing crystal growth facilities and other key instruments at IIT-Bhubaneshwar. This experience will be critical for us to emulate and realize a truly powerful quantum materials research program at our home institute IISER-Berhampur.
We look forward to more visits to and from IIT-Bhubaneshwar and many fruitful collaborations in the future.
Nov 28, 2022: Rahul delivers a talk at Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University
It was one of the best experiences of my life to visit my old friend from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B), Dr. Atreya Chatterjee at Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational Research Institute. I found it to be a great University with a great academic and spiritual atmosphere for holistic life education which is very rare. I was fortunate to give a talk at this august institute which is realizing the vision of Swami Vivekananda, who has been key in the formation of great scientific institutes like the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in India.
Also, I am humbled to have friends like Atreya, more than a decade and growing stronger! I returned with a ton of light and many books! I have always been interested in Vedanta and during my Ph.D., it helped me pull out of severe depression. I highly recommend a visit to this amazing place!
Nov. 12, 2022: Soumyojit joins for his iPhD rotations
Welcome! Soumyojit is looking for a Ph.D. position. Sumyojit has taken up the challenge to be one of the first experimentalists and has been helping me with gigantic task of planning the growth laboratory which involves learning about flux-growth and then looking at the right equipment and suppliers to actually realize our vision of a robust program of quantum material growth.
Sep. 19, 2022: Aditya joins as a Master's thesis student
Welcome! Aditya will be working on developing capabilities to perform ab-initio calculations. In particular with the quantum espresso, Wannier90 and Wannier tools. This will empower our group to focus our materials search by predicting interesting candidates and analyze our future SI-STM results with powerful tools.
Aug. 2, 2022: Rahul joins IISER Berhamur as Assistant Professor
