From September 27th to November 8th, 2025, Lumination NM offered a fun and engaging in-person piano program for youth at the San Felipe Library. San Felipe is a Native American community in New Mexico where access to formal music education and extracurricular arts programs can be limited. This initiative aimed to bring meaningful musical opportunities directly to local children, supporting both cultural enrichment and personal growth.
By the end of the session, many participants were able to play simple melodies and proudly share their progress with family and friends. This program not only promoted musical learning, but also helped strengthen community connection and provided a supportive, uplifting space for youth in the San Felipe community.
Lumination New Mexico donated a few of roll-up pianos to the students who attended the program.
From June 3rd to July 1st, Lumination NM offers free online piano lessons to the public. Elementary students from Native American Schools attended. Kate Shao is the instructor.
From June 4th to July 2nd, Lumination NM offers free online summer camp classes to the public. Elementary students from Native American Schools attended. Kailey S. is the instructor.
From January to March 2025, Kate Shao, representing Lumination New Mexico, provided additional online piano classes to two schools: Many Farms Community School and Cottonwood Day School. Students from kindergarten through 8th grade participated, allowing more Native American children to be introduced to piano education and the joy of music.
In June 2024, Kate Shao taught a series of 10 online piano classes to students at Many Farms Community School (MFCS), a tribally controlled K–8 school operated by the Navajo Nation.
Students at Many Farms Community School were enthusiastic about learning piano, and the school supported the program by providing portable keyboards in each classroom.
