In 2024, Kate Shao, representing Lumination New Mexico, was invited by Sundance Education Consulting to participate in their annual event for Native American teachers, students, and parents. During the event, Kate introduced basic piano concepts to the children and performed for them as well. It was through this experience that she witnessed firsthand the limited resources available to many of these students, who live in remote areas far from the opportunities found in larger cities. Moved by the children’s eagerness to learn and their joy in experiencing music, Kate was inspired to launch a program dedicated to bringing piano instruction and music education directly to underserved Native American youth.

In March 2024, Lumination New Mexico was invited to Cottonwood Day School in Arizona to give a cultural presentation for Native American students and teachers. During the visit, Kate Shao introduced aspects of Chinese culture, sharing music and songs with the students and faculty. The Lumination team also brought gifts, including books, clothing, snacks, and toys from Eastern traditions. The experience was met with excitement and heartfelt appreciation from the school community, creating a meaningful exchange of culture and connection.
