Community engagement is one the Tshwane University of Technology 2020 - 2025 strategic pillars and there is little I knew about it.
Teaching, Learning, Assessments, Research and Community engagement is found to be the key criteria to measure higher learning institutions (CHE framework for institutional audits, 2019). This explains equal importance of community engagement to teaching, learning and assessment.
In the implementation not prioritised, known and understood by TUT community with exceptions for some of the processes at at post graduate level (Research and Innovation). Student do not seem to be aware of the importance of thinking about solving problems in their communities. I believe this is due to the fact that this component is not integrated or aligned with the outcomes in the designed curriculum.
I suggest seamless integration of community engagement in the curriculum by bringing authenticity in the classroom. This will help faculties and learners think of solving problems in the societies.
