BEGINNING BAND

Level I Band

(ALL 6th Grade) 

All 6th Grade Band students are members of the Beginning Band. This class is for all 6th Grade students who are learning instruments! There are two sections of 6th Grade Beginning Band, divided by instrument family (Woodwinds and Brass). In the first semester, students are able to play the Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, or Trombone. After the Winter Band Concert (early Decemeber), students start switching to our secondary instruments. Students may also choose to stay on our primary instruments (Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, or Trombone) or switch to a secondary instrument (Oboe, Bassoon, Bass Clarinet, Saxophone, Horn, Euphonium, Tuba, or Percussion). Students do not need to have any knowledge of music or already own an instrument to join. 

BEGINNING SELECT BAND

After-School Honors Group for 6th Grade Band Students

(SECOND SEMESTER ONLY) 

The Beginning Select Band is an auditioned based honors group for 6th Grade Band students at Lufkin Road Middle School. Students are selected based on class participation, how often the practice outside of school, and by audition. All rehearsals for the Beginning Select Band are after-school during the second semester. The Beginning Select Band performs one concert a year, on the same night as the Beginning Band Spring Concert. 

CONCERT BAND

Level II Band

(Intermediate 7th & 8th Grade)

The Concert Band is open to any student in 7th or 8th Grade who has already taken Beginning Band in 6th Grade. This group does not require an audition. This group participates in our district Concert Band Assessment (MPA or Music Performance Adjudication) and travels in the Spring to compete at either a Music in the Parks competition hosted at either Busch Gardens (VA) or Carowinds. This group meets in two sections: one during 8th Grade electives and the other during 7th Grade electives. 

SYMPHONIC BAND

Level III Band

(Advanced 7th & 8th Grade)

The Lufkin Road Middle School Symphonic Band is an Honors ensemble. This group consists of our most advanced 7th and 8th Grade students at Lufkin Road Middle School. Students must audition to be a part of this ensemble.  Auditions include scales, a solo, and sight reading. This group has additional rehearsals outside of the school day, typically scheduled after school. The Symphonic Band travels around Wake County and regionally, and plays music written for advanced young wind bands. This group meets in two sections: one during 8th Grade electives and the other during 7th Grade electives.
