Someone who has just returned from Switzerland has pointed out to me that, to use the motorway by car in Switzerland, you need to buy a vignette costing 40 CHF, which you can find at almost any petrol station. 

In France, this is not necessary; however, there are tolls on the motorways, and a credit card is sufficient.
