I created this informational handout in collaboration with Kelsey Lowe for our Aural Rehabilitation course. This facilitated my learning in pediatric hearing screenings by reviewing the administration process, results, and importance of preventive hearing screenings. The handout provides information and resources for families.

I performed this simulated hearing screening for adults in an assisted living community to fulfill my required hearing screening hours. This lab allowed me to gain experience in hearing screening administration for older adults. Presbycusis, age-related hearing loss, is a common health condition that can impact functional communication and quality of life. It also correlated with cognitive decline and increased risk for dementia (Bowl & Dawson, 2019). It is especially pertinent to my practice as I plan to continue working with adults who may benefit from further audiology evaluation, hearing amplification, and aural rehabilitation.

I completed a simulated hearing loss lab for my aural rehabilitation course to gain a greater understanding of how different degrees of hearing loss may impact individuals in certain environments. This activity highlighted the difficulty that hearing loss can have on daily activities. It allowed me to empathize with individuals who suffer from hearing loss. It reiterated my role of being an effective communicator by providing repetitions, increasing my volume, and ensuring listener understanding when working with these populations.
The Starkey Hearing Foundation is near and dear to my heart as this was my sorority's philanthropy in my undergraduate career. Each semester we raised awareness and funding to support their cause so "the world may hear."
