Chapter 5. Theoretical Underpinnings
Chapter 5. Theoretical Underpinnings
The main purpose of this thesis is to retrospectively articulate theories and methods underpinning the practice-based projects presented. In all three projects, racially marginalised individuals told stories, in different communities and spaces, to challenge dominant ideology and prompt change and this is an act underpinned by the Critical Race method of counter-storytelling. I articulate this through the four sections of this chapter. In section 5.1, I review literature to identify the various tenets and methods of Critical Race Theory and begin to apply these to the projects. In section 5.2, I offer a detailed description of the Critical Race method of counter-storytelling and the role it plays in HE development generally and within specific project outputs. In sections 5.3 and 5.4, I bring in other theories and methods that underpin the community-building function of counter-storytelling and the radical counter-storytelling spaces in the projects. I explain how these theories and methods are exemplified in the projects throughout, with links to relevant outputs.
