Summary
Summary
The One Act and Play The Night Witches is based off a true story about the all female pilot squad in the Soviet Union during WWII. They are famous for dropping bombs on Nazi troops during the night in planes made only of plywood and canvas. The story follows their struggles, friendship, dreams, and time on the battlefield. Their team will each fall into categories of generals, navigators, pilots. and mechanics, determining my costuming for this production.
The Night Witches was my first time Costuming for an entire cast of people. This was my first year in my Thespian Troupe and so it was a lot on my plate. The idea for the costume was to be accurate to what the actual Night Witches wore and to create a unifying story between them all. I focused on making sure they all matched and aligned while also creating a code between the ranks of their characters.
The two characters that were the leaders or generals had navy skirts, ties, and garrison caps. Navigators had tan pants and pilots green, the main mechanic had a green shirt, and the overall mechanics had bandanas on their heads. I wanted to make sure they all matched and correlated to one another. A second layer to their costuming added for State Competition is that their shoulders held ranks, the more arches on the ranks, the higher up the characters. Any medals reinforced this as well .

The design wasn’t the only part of my job though, I was also involved in the quick changes to their white clothing when they died, the grips on their black socks when they race across stage, and making sure all 10 pairs of the same boots stay allocated to each actor throughout the run.
This one act is one of my proudest achievements, we placed first in District Competition, I won Best Costuming for a One Act, and we were able to move on to State Competition. At State Competition our troupe got first place in our one act slot, making it one of my best theatre experiences.
