Cabaret is a story following the life of Sally Bowles and Cliff Bradshaw during 1931 Nazi Germany. Their drama and the Emcee of the Kit Kat Club are meant to distract the audience from the ongoing rise of the Nazi regime in the background of the musical. It calls out the ignorance of the characters towards this and the audience for getting caught up in the fun of the cabaret.
The costuming for my version of Cabaret is focused on the art movement of Expressionism. Expressionism is characterized by its intense colors, brushstrokes, and unnatural, distorted form. This distress is meant to express the artist’s inner turmoil. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner will be my biggest inspiration as far as painters. Because the genre originated from modern art in Germany during the 20th century, I found it perfect for the story of Cabaret.
Expressionism was declared degenerate art by Hitler and because of its emotional style, I combined it with my costuming, with multiple costumes being inspired by expressionist cinema life Metropolis and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. This can be seen by the brushstrokes found on the costumes and the symbolization found within them.
For Sally's Design I wanted to go with a formal night time look because it is while she is out on the town with Cliff. I made the cut of the dress accurate to the time and included the green fur coat because it is a popular garment in the 30s and are seen in Kirchner's paintings. Her dress has black brush strokes on it to also add to the Expressionist concept. Lastly, I adorn her with pearls because she has a rich taste and I gave her green fingernails as mentioned in her song.
*Green swatch is not included because I own a green fur coat I brought in
My design for Emcee takes place during the performance of Money, a song about capitalism and how money controls our lives. I wanted to symbolize the concept of greed and evil from money through the story of Adam and Eve. Emcee’s look incorporates the snake through the velvet snake pattern upon a sheer fabric and Eve through the velvet green leaves upon his chest and crotch. I also took inspiration from German Mark's and took the foliage from the coins to add to the concept. The look is very camp and to add even more to the idea of power and its control I added shoulder pads to create a militaristic look.
For Fraulein Schneider I wanted to have her wearing a historically accurate pajama set. Therefore it is a pair of flared bottoms and a top that wraps. Because she is an older woman I gave her a sheer shawl that she would use to additionally cover herself. So the look could match the overall visual concept, I added the same black brushstrokes as seen on Sally.
For Kost's look I wanted it to feel evil and represent her and her poor personality. Because she is at a wedding party she is dressed formally, with an ankle length black fringe dress and red scarf. The red symbolizes her siding with the nazi regime. To finish her elegant look I added pearls and a pair of pantyhose to match.
For Cliff I wanted to give him an outfit for going out into the world. During the early 1900s men would wear suits with a fashionable hat. I really enjoy Cliff's outfit but there are multiple things I wish to change about it now. While he does strive to be an acompolished writer, her is still very poor and I think that should be shown in his costume. I also wish I went with a dark blue suit, similarly to Kirchner's paintings.
