1.1 Purposes of practicum (meets or not meets your need)

The SEA-Teacher project aims to provide opportunity for pre-service student teachers from universities in Southeast Asia to have teaching experiences (practicum) in schools in other countries in Southeast Asia.

Specifically, the aims of the SEA – Teacher Project are:

to enable the student teachers to develop their teaching skills and pedagogy.
to encourage the student teachers to practise their English skills.
to allow the student teachers to gain a broader regional and world view.
to expose future teachers to diverse teaching and learning situations and opportunities, and the value of flexibility.

After joining the SEA-Teacher program, I think I can achieve its goals. I gained a lot of new knowledge, especially in terms of pedagogical skills, such as: improving my ability to teach from preparing lesson plans to managing the class well. In addition, I also gained new knowledge about the education system in Thailand which certainly has differences with Indonesia, although the differences are not so much.

During the program, of course, I have to communicate in English. I feel that this has improved my communication skills in English. This is because during teaching practice I had to explain the material using English and in everyday life I also use English to communicate with lecturers, volunteers, and SEA-Teacher participants. In addition, I also had the opportunity to learn a new language, Thai. I learned a few sentences in Thai as well.

1.2 Procedures of practicum

The student teachers have to follow four stages during one month of exchange programme. In this case, the receiving university is given the flexibility to be able to arrange a schedule that include these four stages within 4 weeks of the programme.

First week: Orientation and Class Observation

Second week: Teaching Assistant

Third week: Teaching in Classroom

Forth week: Reflection and Lesson Learned

My biggest challenge during this program was the language, because I realized that my English was still not good enough. Because in the teaching and learning process, teachers and students always use English. At first, it was very difficult for me to communicate with the students. Fortunately, my coordinating teacher gave a lot of good advice and always helped me. In addition, I really appreciate the students who have a passion for learning despite the language difficulties. This makes me always eager to prepare a good teaching and learning process and enjoy my teaching time.

In addition, it was difficult for me to buy something at the store without Volunteer because most Thai people can't all speak or understand English. I was also very careful with my actions as I was worried that I would make a mistake in their culture and beliefs. However, I am very grateful that I was able to overcome these difficulties with the help of the people around me.

1.5 Overall impression

I am very grateful to be part of the SEA Teacher Project Batch 9. This is a great opportunity. It is also one of my dreams to go abroad and bring the name of Indonesia (especially Lampung University). SEA-Teacher Project is a very helpful program for students who will soon become teachers. Personally, I feel that I have grown and become a better person with the help of this program.

I also learned a lot about the culture and education system in Thailand. I had so many amazing and memorable experiences. I met a lot of good people, Thai people are very kind and friendly. Especially to Chiang Mai Rajabhat University (CMRU), thank you so much for welcoming us like family. Although we are different, we respect each other.

I hope we can meet again in the future.

1.6 Suggestions for future improvement

I am very grateful to be part of the SEA-Teacher Project batch 9. This is an amazing opportunity. It is also one of my dreams to be able to go abroad and bring the name of Indonesia (especially Lampung University). The SEA-Teacher Project is a very helpful program for students who will soon become teachers. I personally feel that I have grown and become a better person with the help of this program.
