According to The Origin of Place Names in the United States, published in 1905, Musconetcong means "Rapid Stream".

Like most mills in the area, the water-powered mill at Changewater changed ownership and purpose over the years. In different eras, it operated as the Hopatcong Woolen Mill and the Asbury Graphite Mill.
