"Changewater is near the site of an Indian village called Pelouesse, which was on the Musconetcong in 1715, when John Reading, Jr., was surveying there. It was on an Indian path that crossed the Musconetcong, and led to another village in Hunterdon County, called Monsaloquaks." "The Council of West Jersey Proprietors was formed in the late 1600s with the goal of surveying and having charge of un-appropriated lands. In 1703, they appointed Militia Captain John Reading as one of the men tasked with surveying and purchasing the great tract of 150,000 acres between the Raritan and Delaware Rivers from the Lenape.
After studying abroad, his son began assisting him in his surveyor work. In 1715, John Reading, Jr. surveyed this area. He identified Pelousse, a Lenape Village . . . " Presented to the Council of Proprietors of West Jersey by C. Chester Craig on March 11, 1922
