Through regular classroom visits, the University Supervisor, in concert with the Cooperating Teacher and the Student Teacher, should be able to form an accurate judgment of the Student Teacher’s growth. These visits provide opportunities to observe and to conference with the Student Teacher as well as the Cooperating Teacher. The University Supervisor may visit on an announced as well as an unannounced schedule.
Bi-weekly supervisory visits are expected and should be scheduled at the end of an observation. Because it is essential that the Student Teacher be kept aware of the University Supervisor’s assessment, feedback must be provided following each observation. The feedback will be both oral and written.
It is important for the University Supervisor to schedule visits at a time and in a place that permits the most effective use of time and provides a degree of privacy. Because it is essential that the Student Teacher be kept aware of the University Supervisor’s assessment, feedback must be provided following each observation. The feedback will be both oral and written, with written feedback maintained for the student’s file in the Teacher Education Office.
All supervisors will complete a written assessment of each classroom observation using the Observation Form in the Appendix. In addition, the supervisor will complete a Midterm Evaluation and a Final Evaluation using the PDE 430. Both the Cooperating Teacher and the Student Teacher will also complete a Midterm evaluation and a Final Evaluation using the PDE 430. A meeting time will be determined for Cooperating Teacher, the Student Teacher, and the University Supervisor to review and discuss the Midterm and final Evaluations. These evaluations will be placed in the Student Teacher’s official student file.
The Cooperating Teacher will provide input in determining the student’s final grade; however, the University Supervisor is the one who assigns the final grade.
The University Supervisor is a vital part of the team that is supporting and guiding the Student Teacher. Regular contact with the Cooperating Teacher will serve to strengthen the team. From time to time it may be beneficial to meet with the Cooperating Teacher with the Student Teacher present. In that way all members of the student teaching team may share important data. These meetings should be scheduled at a mutually convenient time.
