LR 10 is a one-unit course designed to ensure that students are equipped with college-level research and information skills necessary for lifelong learning. The course is designed to be taken concurrently with English 1: College Composition.
Today's students have a dizzying number of information access points; the Internet is amazing and powerful and connects us to SO much! Library research is no longer contained within four walls filled with books; this class will equip you with an array of college-level research tools and techniques necessary to carry you through your college career, and beyond.
There are no required textbooks for this course. Hooray! Any required materials for my class are embedded right inside our Canvas classroom.
Some of my lectures may look or feel a little long, but that’s because I’ve embedded lots of videos and screenshots to the databases we are learning about, and those screenshots walk you through each database, so they’re very important. As such, it’s important that you watch the videos and go through the lecture materials, since these replace the traditional textbook requirement.
be critical about the information you consume
understand the principles of academic research
learn how to avoid plagiarism and cite your sources
choose the right information and search tool for your specific information need
use information tools (electronic and print) to locate and retrieve relevant information
The “official” course objectives above are what we will focus on week by week, but the OVERALL objective I hope you all will leave with is that the library is a safe, fun, friendly place and you can ask me or any librarian for help anytime!
Well, the Library Building is currently closed but the Virtual Library is open! We will be using a bunch of library tools and services from the Virtual Library this semester. It is also linked in our course’s navigation bar.
You'll need to access the library's tools directly from the Virtual Library page (googling a library tool won't work).
