(YN1) Charlie Ingram, passed in 2003.
It's difficult to talk about the history of this organization without paying homage to those that got it started. YN1 Charlie Ingram (deceased) was a founding member and the first president of the association. He and his wife, Jo, were regular attendees at all the meetings. Jo still attends as she is able. Before his passing in 2003, Charlie advised the board officers at that time, "Make sure you keep the reunions going." And, so they did.
This association has been in existence for over 25 years. Over those years, it was mostly a small group of Plank Owner members that kept the group going. Now, newer members are stepping up and continue this tradition. We all still keep in contact, share information and organize an annual gathering of former shipmates and family members of those who proudly served the 3rd ship to bear the name "USS Cleveland."
As of the fall of 2022, the newest board members endeavor to further the mission of the association by increasing awareness of this group of veterans and their families. We look forward to serving our former shipmates and their families during our tenure.
We welcome new members from the Steamin' Cleve to join us and share in the camaraderie and help in keeping this organization operating.
LPD-7 was the third ship to bear the name, Cleveland. A more detailed history can be found here.
Today, the gallant ship has been decommissioned and remains moored in Pearl Harbor. Below, are the emotions that Paul Gesswien, ships Navigation Officer, felt as he reflected on the Ships long illustrious career, while attending her Decommissioning Ceremony.
