The Association organized an optional USS Alabama (BB-60) Battleship tour and luncheon on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
The USS Alabama is a retired battleship. She was the fourth and final member of the South Dakota class of fast battleships built for the United States Navy in the 1940s. Home to a crew of 2,500 courageous Americans, this 45,000 ton war machine’s WWII adventure culminated with BB-60 leading the American Fleet into Tokyo Bay on September 5, 1945. Nine Battle Stars for meritorious service were awarded the “Mighty A” during her brief three year tenure as the “Heroine of the Pacific”. Find out more: Brief history of USS Alabama.
The self-guided tour will include printed guides. Touring of the USS ALABAMA, USS DRUM and the Medal of Honor Aircraft Pavilion is included. While you are there, you can take a stroll of the grounds and visit the war memorials. Among them are the Fallen Heroes 9/11 Memorial dedicated in 2015 and a memorial to our nation’s military service dogs. There are impressive installations of tanks, guns and airplanes to explore too.
Lunch was served in the (temperature controlled) wardroom and consisted of BBQ Chicken, BBQ Beef Brisket, BBQ Baked Beans, Homemade Coleslaw, Cookies, and Brownies.

Located on the banks of the sparkling Mobile River and at the northern tip of Mobile Bay is Alabama's only saltwater port and its fourth most populous city. Though Mobile's location is an enormous driver in its economy, a much-overlooked aspect of this large city is its arts, culture, and festival scene. Depending on when you plan to arrive and leave, you might consider having a look at the local performances from orchestras, operas, and ballets, or visit the art galleries.
