What is the PTA? Frequently asked questions

1. What is the PTA? The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) raises money to bring additional activities to our students that the district/state is currently not funding. Lowell has many wonderful PTA-sponsored activities going on throughout the year, including field trips, assemblies, art enrichment, family events, and after school programs.

2. What types of PTA volunteering opportunities are available?: The PTA is always looking for volunteers to help run the existing events and bring new energy and ideas for creating new programs.  You can chair a committee, be a committee member, or volunteer for an hour or two at an event. 

3. What is the Executive Board? The Executive Board is made up of the elected Lowell PTA officers, including the President(s), Vice President(s), Treasurer(s), and Secretary.       

4. What is the Board of Directors? The Board of Directors is made up of the executive board, our principal, a teacher representative, and the chairs of standing committees—those whose work runs all year long. All board members must be voting members of the PTA.

5. What are Committee Chairs? Committee chairs lead the team that’s coordinating/organizing a PTA event or service. Chairs are also responsible for scheduling and running meetings and tracking their committee’s budget. They must all be voting members of the PTA.

6. Do I get a say? You can come to any meeting and voice your opinion. If you want to formally vote, you will need to become a PTA member.

7. What to expect at a PTA meeting? The Meeting format;  The minutes from the previous meeting are reviewed and approved. Reports and/or updates are given from our principal, the PTA president, treasurer, and committee chairs. Sometimes, a special topic is covered by a guest speaker for 15-20 minutes. Ideas are proposed, discussed, and voted on. Upcoming event announcements and requests for help are made.

9. How long does my PTA membership last? PTA memberships need to be renewed annually. They expire every October 31st.
