This is the most crucial step in determining whether you can stick with and pursue learning Vietnamese in the long run. Ask yourself: - Why do you want to learn Vietnamese?
-Β What are your goals?
- How will learning Vietnamese benefit you in your life and work?
Write down these reasons and stick them somewhere you can see them easily, such as your desk, refrigerator, or mirror. This way, whenever you feel discouraged, you can look at them and regain your motivation.
This tip may sound silly, but it really helps for my students or even me. This lifted up my spirit whenever I felt down when practicing English.
2. πͺππππππ πππ πππππππππππππ πππππππππ
Pronunciation is one of the biggest hurdles for beginners learning Vietnamese, especially for native English speakers or speakers of languages without tones. Vietnamese has 6 tones (Northern dialect) and 5 tones (Southern dialect), and changing the tone can completely change the meaning of a word.
Tips:
- Find a teacher or native speaker for support: Having someone to correct your pronunciation from the beginning is crucial.
- Practice regularly: Set aside time each day to practice pronunciation. You can use online exercises, instructional videos, or read aloud from news articles or passages.
- Be patient: Don't get discouraged if you can't pronounce everything perfectly right away. Keep practicing, and you will improve every day.

Once you have a grasp of pronunciation, you can start learning basic vocabulary and grammar.
- Start with simple and everyday topics:such as greetings, introducing yourself, shopping, etc.
- Learn vocabulary by topic: This will help you memorize and use vocabulary more effectively

- Use flashcards and Vietnamese learning apps: These tools can make learning vocabulary more fun and help you remember words more easily.

Listening is an essential skill for understanding and communicating in Vietnamese.
Here are some ways to improve your Vietnamese listening skills:
- π³πππππ ππ ππππ ππππππππ especially when you finish learning a conversation, ask your teacher to send you an audio files so you can listen to them again and again until you feel that you can understand the audio files easily. Spend most of the time listen to all of the audio files you already learn because it will definitely help you to memorize the vocabulary, the sentence patterns and also how the sounds are created. This is very crucial if you would like to achieve the language.
- Honestly, I wouldnβt recommend watching Vietnamese movies or TV shows for beginners because it would be overwhelming at first when you barely know the language.
- Listen to Vietnamese music: Choose songs with a slow, easy melody and Vietnamese subtitles. This can help to develop the love for the language.

To become fluent in Vietnamese, you need to practice speaking regularly.
Here are some ways to improve your Vietnamese speaking skills:
- Use shadowing technique: For beginners, I would highly recommend practicing shadowing with your learning materials first, at a slower pace. When you feel comfortable with speaking Vietnamese slowly (make sure you get the tones right) then you can speed up.
- Find a language partner or native speaker to practice with: This is the best way to practice real-life Vietnamese communication because there will be some random common words that pop out of our mouth that the textbooks never mention.

Learning a language is a long-term process that requires consistency. Make sure to set aside time each day to study, even if it's just for a short period. Don't be afraid to make mistakes; instead, view them as opportunities to learn and grow.
One of my experiences is that I create a habit tracker for my students so they can make learning Vietnamese a habit. And together we do something like 21-day challenge of mastering the pronunciation or 21-day challenge of shadowing Vietnamese language.
And donβt forget to reward yourself after the challenge so you get more motivation to continue the learning journey.
Remember, the key to success is to find a learning method that works for you and to stick with it. With consistent effort and dedication, you can achieve your goal of becoming fluent in Vietnamese.
