Pinna and Ear Canal
The area past your eardrum. Ossicle bones, middle ear cavity, and muscles.
Two sections:
the cochlea and vestibular system, as well as the VIII nerve that has an auditory branch and vestibular branch.
(Musiek and Baran, page 3.)
Peripheral means away from the center.
This system includes the temporal bone, which has 6 parts: the squamous portion, the mastoid process, the external auditory meatus (ear canal,) styloid process, mandibular fossa, and zygomatic process. When looking at your ear and head, this is the bone all around ear and behind it, you probably thought it was just your skull. Cool Right?
The Brainstem:
The midbrain, pons, medulla, and spinal cord.
The Brain:
4 lobes:
occipital, temporal, parietal, and frontal
Auditory Cortex:
Part of the temporal lobe that processes auditory information.
Nerve Fibers: Afferent-goes up and send messages to the brain.
Efferent- goes down, and sends messages away from brain to ear.
(Musiek and Baran, page 20.)
Conductive: issue in the outer or middle ear and it can be corrected
Sensorineural: issue with the inner ear within the cochlea or auditory nerve and most likely can’t be fixed.
Mixed: issue with both sections (Outer/middle and inner ear.)
