Climbing the UDL Ladder: Building a Culture of Inclusion in Higher Education
26 May, 2021
This CUA Universal Design for Learning (UDL) conference will investigate a myriad of approaches to UDL through an exploration of shared best inclusive practice. Through creating an awareness of a cross-campus approach to implementing a culture of inclusion and diversity, the Institute of Technology Sligo (IT Sligo) has made significant strides in climbing the UDL ladder to bring this vision to reality. The teaching and learning framework that is UDL has guided this transition to provide for a high-quality educational experience. Together with our partners Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) and Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), IT Sligo welcomes colleagues across all higher education institutions to examine and reflect on your UDL practices within your programme to ensure the student learning experience provides for the unique learning needs of students in a changing world.

CISC Online Seminar 2021
12 May, 2021
This online seminar introduced the idea of ecologies for learning and practice and the ecosocial systems within which such ecologies are enacted and considered how creativity emerges from such ecologies as people interact with their environments and the people and things that matter to them. Attendees explored how these ideas might be used in social care work and educational practice to understand creativity and what being creative means.
Learning Outcome
The opportunity to map my own ecology of learning, practice and creativity within a component of a module I deliver to 2nd year social care students has been very helpful to me in terms of interpreting my creative teaching practice. It has given me a better understanding of how creativity emerges in the enactment of an ecology of practice (Jackson, 2020). I also see the usefulness of this framework for the social care student as it can help them identify where their creativity emerges from and make sense of their own creativity.
Impact on practice
I have adopted a more integrated view of creativity within practice and learning following my introduction to the ecological framework for practice, learning and creativity in social care education and practice. The concept of creativity as transformation is one which I would not have given much attention to until the seminar and I now see the relevance of this idea to students' learning. Having applied the concepts, tools and frameworks espoused by Dr Norman Jackson I have come to recognise and appreciate aspects of my teaching practice as potentially transformative learning experience for students.
