What is a science fair?
This is an optional after school event where students get to explore all sorts of different things in science. Each person puts together a project and on the night of the science fair, everyone shares their project. This means you get to show people what you learned, and you get to learn about the things other people did.
What kind of things can I do?
Anything that you’re interested in! Try to make it something that is easy to do at home and doesn’t require special supplies. Here are a few examples:
· You can do an experiment: Do bananas brown faster on the counter or fridge? Is it the same if it’s in a paper or plastic bag?
· You can do a discovery: Which type of bird seed do the animals prefer? If I put out 3 different kinds of bird food, is there one that’s gone the fastest? Is there a type of bird (or squirrel!) that really likes one of the kinds?
· You can do a collection: Collect the types of seeds that are found in your neighborhood, or different kinds of rocks, or different kinds of shells
How do I do my project?
Decide on your topic, then think through how you want to do it. It’s okay if you need to try a few ways to get it to what you’re picturing! Gather your supplies and information and do your experiment, collection, or discovery. Gather up some craft supplies and put together a display. People often use a poster board to put up drawings, information, or pictures, but that’s not up to you. You’ll have a table in the gym to do your display.
What happens on the night of the science fair?
You’ll arrive at the school to check in, where you’ll get a card with your name and grade. You will then go to the gym or cafeteria as assigned and find the area for your grade. Set up your project and attach your card in a place where people can see it. Projects will be displayed for a full hour and you can go check out other projects, but you should plan to be by your project for the 20 minutes for your grade. During that time a guest scientist in a white coat will come by to learn about your work. This is a really fun chance to tell all about the things you learned! You’ll receive a participation reward from the scientist.
Have fun with your Science Project!!
