Memories from Alumni & Friends

During this Centennial season, we are privileged to read wonderful notes containing stories and memories submitted by alumni and friends. Here are a few samples for your enjoyment.

Baby Ida arrived on October 7, 2017 at 1:41pm, 6 lbs 1 oz and 19" long. (Perhaps she wanted to be here in time for the LCM Centennial.) Congratulations!

Nora Robinson, BA, 2004

Note: my due date is October 27, so if I don’t come, it’s because I’ve just had a baby.*

I never would’ve joined Lord of Light if my dad, Sherman Robinson, hadn’t said he’d gone to LOL when he was an undergrad in the 60s. I was a peer minister and sometimes played trombone in the services. My fondest memory is when John Rollefson did a blessing for me before I studied abroad, and Tim Krohn caught on fire. Literally.

Dorothy Bauer, BD, 1942

In the midst of a large and noisy campus, in a world increasingly torn by war and dissension, there existed a place where friendships blossomed, challenging ideas explored, and faith enlarged. LSA was my Sunday evening harbor.

On the 7th Sunday of Easter, May 18, 1980, Pastor Gordon Ward Baptized me into the Death and Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at the altar at Lord of Light.

The Rev. Terry L. and Mrs. Ellie Daly

We were married in the chapel by Henry Yoder in 1964 when I was Pastor at Peace Lutheran Church (now the Neighborhood Center). Blessings on your Centennial!

Ruth Kallio, BS ‘71

From my days as a student and then a long-standing member of Lord of Light, I have many fond memories of: retreats that were fun and engaged the mind and the soul; lunches (Oktoberfests, Seders, Advent/Christmas, Easter), participating in annual CROP Walks; helping out with Hunger Coalition dinners, canoeing down the Huron River past “nude beach,” talent shows where participants displayed surprising and impressive hidden talents, and most of all, being part of a loving, caring and faithful community of Christians.

Carol Stroud Mickel, BS (Educ.) ‘59 & John Mickel, PhD, ‘61

I still remember with joy my years at the Lutheran Student Center, my spiritual home, 1955-1959. Pastor Yoder employed me as a cleaner. I remember cleaning the kitchen after a spicy Indian mean with its fragrant aroma. I love the Center Secretary; she ran the place! A wonderful, loving lady! I loved the lectures by Professor Mendenhall and Sociology Professor Gerhard Lenski; my favorite classes were Professor Mendenhall’s OT and NT History classes.

John and I were married in 1959; we worshiped at Zion and attended Professor Mendenhall’s Bible studies. Great memories!

Thanks to God also for my friend, Nancy Mattson Severtson. She was President and I was Vice President of the Student Organization at one point.

Keep up the good work! It is so important!

Wish I was wealthy and could give more – campus ministry is so important

I was a regular attendee from 1963-1967. Dr. Henry Yoder was Pastor. I have such fond memories of (him) and his wife Ruth during those years; they had such an influence in shaping my life. I came from a small town (Three Rivers) to a BIG university – had no clue what life was about – such a great experience!

Roland Schaedig, BA (German) ‘62

I was the resident custodian academic years ’60-’62 and summers ’62 and ’63 as well. I worked, worshiped, studied, sang in choir, ate, slept and socialized in the Lutheran Student Center and Chapel. The Campus Ministry letterhead carried the names of some seven Lutheran denominations.

Dottie (Curtis) Taylor, BSN ‘55

Our class was the first nursing graduates that were all degree students. I was part of a small number for whom they made a special 4-year program – as we were caught in the middle of the 5-year degree students & the new 4-year program that started in the fall of 1956. A year after graduating I taught some of these 4 year students Medical-Surgical Nursing for 2 years.

Gordon and Lois Ward

Thanks so much for the opportunity to be part of the celebration. Our ministry with the Lord of Light community will always be a treasured memory for our family. Never have we experienced a more authentic Christian community.
