... RAILWAYS VOLUNTEER REGIMENT.
. A notice Has been issued Informing railway employes' that the enrolment, of the Victorian Railways Volunteer Regiment wilt take place to-night, between 8 and 10 o'clock, and on Saturday, 29th inst., between 3 and 6 p.m., at the depot of the field engineers, on the Yarra-bank, near Princes-bridge,
In February last official sanction was sought, and eventually obtained. - A meeting of tbe railway employes was then held.' and the proposal was unanimously approved of, as the employes considered it most desirable to form a transport and engineers corps for the defence of the Victorian railway lines. Some official difficulties were encountered- in establishing the regiment. Ultimately, in order to keep the cost of the regiment down, it was suggested that the metropolitan section of 200 should be allowed to start operations at once, on the approval of the commandant, Mr. M'Cullocb, Minister of Defence readily consenting, and the regiment was gazetted last ; Saturday, Lieutenant-Colonel John Walter Hacker, deputy: quartermaster-general, .being appointed officer commanding during construction;
This regiment has volunteers from all parts, of the colony; Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong and Benalla have each a section of 50 volunteers most anxious to start operations, but must- now wait, until the Commonwealth Minister of Defence grants permission for the extension of the regiment, because over 200 employes in the metropolitan area have registered their names for enlistment, and are waiting to be enrolled, and as the employes are . to purchase their uniform and give their time, they deserve every encouragement,

... Some time ago the Victorian militii was strengthened by the formation of a corps of railway employees, known as the Victorian Railways Infantry. Their uniform was a sort of black and red, and they reminded one somewhat of a popular Melbourne football club which takes its name from one of the northern
suburbs. However, the attendance at parades, and the general strength of this body of troops has so dwindled that the Defence Department has declared it disbanded, and so it is now a thing of the past. It is said, with what truth I know not, that when the vote was practically taken away from the civil service a good many of the members said they would not bear arms unless they bad the same voice as their
fellow citizens in the government of the country they would be expected to defend if necessity arose, and sent in their rifles and their kits wholesale. If such was really the case one can hardly be surprised. Of course a soldier in the old country has no vote, but a regular force of professional warriors is a
very different thing from a regiment of citizen soldiers.
