Suggestions for Ways to Engage Your Child(ren) in Laps for Longfellow
GUIDE FOR FAMILIES
Once you have received the fundraising envelope: tell your child(ren) about the event, and what the fundraising envelope is for.
The funds raised help the school in many ways - from buying their books and school supplies, paying for field trips, magazine subscriptions, to supplies for the nurse and guidance counselor, helping families in need, and fun activities like the popsicle social and the garden cleanup.
Simply showing up on the day of the event is an accomplishment!
For each week leading up to the event: remind children of the event, continue fundraising with them, and choose any of the following conversation prompts (choose or modify to make age appropriate):
Ask them what Laps for Longfellow was like for them last year, when they went to the track at Memorial Field, and got Silly Bandz each time they walked or ran around the loop.
What were the best parts? Worst parts? Surprises?
Did you feel brave? Tell me about it.
Practice walking or running for the event together with your child(ren) - working your way up to 20 minutes.
Remind them of one of the main goals for the event - HAVING FUN!
Let them know about the awards this year. Awards will be given to the class in each grade with: a) The most laps, and b) The most school spirit and honor.
Ask children what some examples are of playing fairly and respectfully or of helping others at the event.
Week of the event:
Remind children to dress up for the event AND to dress warmly and in layers.
Remind children to bring their water bottles to school
Remind children to turn in their fundraising envelopes. They are due by the day of the event, Tuesday, October 6th.
After the event:
Debrief - Ask children how it went, what went well, what could have been better?
Acknowledge their hard work and bravery, and thank them for their efforts.
