Richmond Park
The Richmond Park by-election in 2016 was an outstanding success for the Liberal Democrat candidate Sarah Olney who had been endorsed by the Vote for Europe Campaign.
The street work was coordinated by Roland Kay, and maps prepared by Justen Hyde who also committed his method to writing. This description, and a trail of facebook developments can be seen in this document. The complete set of maps that he made can be seen below.
Rather than using constituency wards, Justen divides a master map of the constituency by eye, and on the left and here is his map of Richmond . Compared to the ward map on the right, there are more sub-divisions.
" Make a master map of the whole constituency and divide it into areas. Each one should be the right size for a group to target it in a day - so, for example, in Witney, Woodstock is a good single area. In Richmond Park, as it's more dense, I just divided it up into what seemed reasonable blocks."
The next stage is this:
"For each of those sections, you then need to divide it up into sub-sections that can be done in an hour or two by a pair of people. This is where street view is handy - try to carve the sub sections so that they make sense to people on the ground; do full streets, use obvious junctions or landmarks as end points. Take a look at where doors point, especially on junctions. "
At first the approach was simply to provide these sub-sections by themselves, identified by different colours, dark and light, fitting into a separate overview map. Leafleters found it difficult to orientate themselves to the streets outside the sub-section, and there were not always enough overview maps to go round.
