The Lochman Project
Building a Texas Hill Country community through collaborative storytelling
Lochman, Texas sits quietly in the Hill Country near the Blanco River—population 428, founded in 1872, and home to the kind of neighbors who know your truck’s particular rattle and exactly which casserole you brought to the last church potluck.
The catch? Lochman doesn’t exist. Yet.
The Lochman Project is a collaborative fiction experiment disguised as a small-town newspaper. Contributors from all over help shape the life of this imaginary community—writing obituaries, letters to the editor, church bulletins, and classified ads that feel as real as anything you’d find tucked into a bulletin board at the feed store.
This isn’t satire that mocks rural life or nostalgia that smooths everything over. Lochman has the same mix of beauty, gossip, kindness, frustration, and quiet mystery you'd find in any real small town. The only difference is—we’re building it together, one story at a time.
What Is Lochman?
Lochman feels like a real place because it’s written with emotional honesty and hyperrealistic detail. The town’s made-up, but the people feel true.
Every contributor writes as if they live there. You might take on the voice of the church secretary typing up bulletins, the teenager working a summer job at the peach stand, or the grieving son drafting his father’s obituary. These aren’t outside observations. They’re the inside voices of the town itself.
You’re not just telling stories. You’re inhabiting a place.
How It Works
Each month, The Lochman Ledger publishes a handful of new pieces—little windows into the ongoing life of the town. Submissions range from heartfelt to hilarious, structured to sketchy. What matters is that they feel true.
Contributors receive optional monthly story seeds, town updates, and prompts
You can write under your name, a fictional persona, or anonymously
The tone is realistic, grounded, and emotionally resonant—not polished fiction, but everyday truth
This is world-building with a porch swing and a pot of coffee.
The Reading Experience
Issues of The Lochman Ledger go out around the 25th of each month via Substack. Each one contains new pieces: a thank-you note from a rescued cat’s owner, an update from the Ruiz family peach stand, or a slightly bitter editorial about potholes on County Road 405.
Stories can stand alone—but they’re stronger when read together, like neighbors talking across fences. There’s continuity. Characters evolve. Consequences ripple. We’re building a quiet kind of community, one imagined memory at a time.
