What is this?

I gave this quiz to 8th graders during my placement at R.L.S. Middle School following the lesson shown on my ELA TPE a page.  At the top is the final paragraph of an article we started to break down in the that lesson, focusing on how to paraphrase content and tell whether it is a topic sentence, supporting detail, or conclusion sentence. The students were instructed to read the paragraph, order the summary sentences, and identify which part of the summary structure they exemplified. The original quiz, answer key, and student work examples are shown above. 

Why did I choose it?

I chose this quiz because it allowed me to quickly assess student mastery of the previous day's content at the start of a lesson so I could adjust that day's instruction. The quiz tasks directly reflect what was covered in the lesson and the tasks the students were asked to do. I had them correct their answers in a different color. The results helped me identify whether students had understood how chunks of information are distilled into main ideas, and whether they could identify proper structure in a new example.

What did I learn?

In the process of creating this quiz, I practiced creating clear instructions. In analyzing the assessment results, I learned that most students had understood how to identify the correct order of paraphrased sentences based on the given excerpt. A few still found it challenging to figure out which sentence exemplified each part of the paragraph.  In the rest of that day's lesson, during group  activities and class discussion, I made sure to highlight clues for identifying parts of paragraph structure in new examples.
