Hi! I'm Liz. I am 32 years old, and I am studying Occupational Therapy at Oxford Brookes University. I am in my 1st year of a BSc course.
After 11 years working in Operations for an educational publishing company, I suddenly found myself made redundant (during a pandemic) with no clue what to do next. I started that job when I was 19 and I was 30 by the time I left. I spent a third of my life there and it was all I knew.
I took some time to think about what I could do next as a career but I wasn't sure. What I did know though was that I wanted to help people. After some research and some support from a careers councillor, I decided that I wanted to pursue occupational therapy. I chose OT because it's a holistic approach to helping people to do every day tasks independently.
Alongside my studies at Brookes I work part time at the Oxford Brookes Centre for Sport in Headington as a receptionist and a steward.
Running is a big passion of mine. I have been running since 2016 when I decided I wanted to train to run the Oxford Town and Gown in May 2017.
In October 2021 I ran the Oxford half marathon. It was my first ever half marathon and I had been training for months. I was over the moon to complete it. I was so proud of myself, I will run it again in 2023!
Running helps my mental health a lot, I find that it releases stress and helps me to not think about things that might be worrying me at the moment. This is really import when working as an OT as I need to ensure my own mental health is looked after.
As point 6.8.1 of the RCOT Professional standards for occupational therapy practice, conduct and ethics states: 'You monitor and proactively look after your own physical and mental health and wellbeing'.
I have always loved cooking but during the lockdowns in 2020 I began cooking a dish from a different country every Saturday night. My most favourite dish was Chicken Katsu Curry which is a popular Japanese dish. I still make it a lot now and I am just trying to make it my version of perfect!
My brother is a chef and he has taught me some skills such as how to chop vegetables and how to make sauces so these have really come useful in my own practise of cooking.
I also bake a very good banana bread!
I have been into fitness for quite a few years now and during 2021 I hired a personal trainer to help me hit some fitness goals of mine. The picture above is from his client group session in which we also had a professional photoshoot which was really fun.
I also became interested in helping others with their fitness goals and this became apparent when I spent 2020 trying to figure out what I wanted to do next with my life!
I hold a level 2 gym instruction certificate which I obtained through working for Brookes Sport. I also now have my level 3 coursework which I plan to complete over the summer of 2023. This will enable me to work with clients to help them achieve their fitness goals.
Keeping fit and having confidence in my body is important to me.
I have always loved the guitar. As a child, my parents bought me a toy guitar that I never put down and caused them many headaches. As a teenager I tried to learn many times but I didn't have the patience so I kept selling the guitars I had bought and essentially gave up.
During the 2020 lockdowns I needed to find something to occupy my mind so I started having guitar lessons. I eventually bought myself a new acoustic guitar and I am still playing now in 2022. I am still a novice but I am enjoying taking my time with it, and I am also enjoying looking at the beautiful guitar in the room so its the best of both.
I found the British Scandal podcast last year when they were on season 12 and now they're just starting season 20! I have listed to all of them. Each season relates to a scandal that has either happened in Britian or to British people abroad. It's really quite interesting. There are some I wasn't aware of and others I can just about remember hearing about.
Michael and Hilary are the parents of comedian Jack Whitehall. They released a podcast in 2021 where listeners can email in with questions or, things they need advice on and the Whitehall's will respond and tell stories etc. It's quite funny so I enjoy listening when I need a laugh or time to unwind.
