The challenge for July is to turn a Christmas ornament.
The July Meetup will be on the 31st July. 9:30 start. Can you please bring a camp chair, so we can have somewhere comfy to have a tea/coffee and a yarn. Please DM for address.
These images have been copied from Pinterest. Many can be turned between centres. Remember, it's called a challenge so you can step up in skill development - turn something you wouldn't normally turn, use a tool you don't normally use, discover new ways to do things. The challenge is against yourself - not against those who come along.
Here's an alternative.
Grab a branch of something you've just pruned (except eucalypt/corymbia).
These make great Xmas tress and don't eat into your precious wood pile. The first 10mins or so are enough - unless you have time to get through the entire video.
Entries in this months challenge - Xmas trees, Snowman weeble and hollowed Xmas tree ornament.
I thought this month may be a good opportunity to talk about all things finishing. Sharp tools, scrapers, abrasives, abrasive pastes, bowl sanders, power sanding, sanding sealers, finishing coats, and airbrushing.
If you can, bring along a couple of small pieces to highlight how your favourite finish looks on an end product.
Again, we're looking at the pros and cons of different finishes. There's bound to be more than one way to get the desired effect,
What comes before sanding? See Resources page - video
Do you need to avoid turning after sanding?
What sort of backing is on the abrasive paper? Cloth or paper?
Which abrasive is on the "paper"? Aluminium oxide, silicon carbide, ????
Are bowl sanders effective?
What are pored and non-pored woods?
What is sanding sealer?
Which sanding sealer is best?
When don't I use sanding sealer?
Can I use any oil to finish my turned item? Are any food safe?
What finishes can I apply to turning?
Which finish is best?
What is friction polish?
What other finishes are there? Polyurethane, milk paint, dyes
Where do textures/pyrography fit into this?
