While at Boston College (1967-1971) I reveled in used bookstores and became a bibliophile. Each semester I found it hard to choose only five or six courses out of so many choices. My majors were English and Philosophy. Later, I studied for masters in religious education and pastoral studies.
Hired by Catholic parishes to focus on adult education (1988-2007) one strategy was building a library. When that ended several churches and individuals took stewardship of a portion of these resources; most have now been moved to storage units for which I have paid $19,000 in rental fees since 2017. (There has to be a better way!)
Since 2014 my appetite for learning has been nourished by auditing 55 courses at UW-SP. cf. My online profile. Having a local university gives Portage County the potential to grow into a true Communiversity, "a tool to bring collectives of people together to both critically read and rewrite their worlds."
Along the way I discovered the idea of Living (or Human) Libraries. Also, a cogent quote by a library scientist, R. David Lankes, "Bad libraries build collections, good libraries build services, great libraries build communities." My focus turned from books to readers.
For 50+ years I have hounded used book stores and sales. I have accumulated thousands of books. I NEED YOUR HELP to transform these collections into community assets. Many sponsors are needed to take them out of storage and put them in the hands of readers who care enough to share. Will you lend a hand and your heart?
