3 Stages of Succession (Anna Coromina and Aviv Kruglanski) is an arts collaboration that uses creative practice to cultivate community economies and grassroots forms of organizing in neighbourhoods. ‘How to become a fox’ is a presentation we created to talk to people who work towards social change ‘seriously’ to convey to them the usefulness, even the urgency of incorporating play in their work processes. We start with political psychologist Phillip Tetlock interpreting Isaiah Berlin interpreting ancient Greek poet Archilochus, the famous metaphor of the fox and the hedgehog. We continue with the work of play scholar Scott Eberle. We end with example of playful tools we are developing to support budding social enterprises in responding to challenges. These tools are based on research we are doing with local projects in Hull (UK) identifying some of their main challenges. We present this work as an example of the relationship community economies thinking (which we consider playful, ‘fox-like’) can have with the day to day, with the practical challenges of diversifying economies on the ground. We are hoping to have a conversation about this more general theme, as well as of our own work that responds to it, after the presentation.
